When it comes to knife sharpeners understanding the difference between them is essential for choosing the right one for yours' and your knifes' needs, as each type offers unique benefits and techniques for achieving that sharp edge.

So lets go through some of them.

Steels

Knife sharpening steels (also known as honing steels) are typically made from Steel but some can have ceramic or diamond coatings for extra effectiveness. The surface ranges from extra fine to coarse grit and come in different lengths shapes such as oval or round with ergonomic handles.

Using a steel requires you to hold it vertically and glide the knife along the steel at a consistent angle in a sweeping motion. This will realign the edge of the knife and help to maintain its sharpness and prolong the time between sharpens. It is recommended to use steels more regualary then other sharpening options.

Knife sharpneing steels are a quick and convenient way to keep your knives in shape. To explore our range of high quality steels and reputable brands CLICK HERE.

Stones

Stone sharpeners (also known as Whetstones) can provide a more refined edge than sharpening steels. However depending on what you use your knives for, you may not want it to be as sharp as a stone can get it to be.Various grit levels are available so that you can chose what will suit the condition of your knife and how sharp you want it to be. They can be used on a variety of knives making them a versatile tool for knife owners.

Most stones are meant to be soaked in water or oil before use. Here at Metal Apparel we provide pre oiled and dry whetstones. The purpose of using water or oil on the stone is to lubricate the stone to prevent tiny bits of metal from the knife getting stuck on the surface.

Using a Stone requires a specific technique including the right angle and consistent pressure. It may take some practice to master but many find it rewarding for the control it provides. To explore sharpening stones CLICK HERE.
